About the job

The first photo shows the garden before any work: bare soil and rough grass behind new houses, with white lines marking out the area.

The footings and the retaining wall went in first, and the ground levels were then built up behind the wall, ready for an Indian sandstone patio and artificial grass. The photo of the block retaining wall shows how much the ground was raised behind it, which is why the wall is built before anything is laid.

The sandstone was laid on the built-up base in a random pattern of mixed slab sizes, and a strip of artificial grass runs beside the patio. The finished patio sits inside new timber fencing.

FAQ

Questions about this job

Why build the retaining wall first?

The wall holds the built-up ground in place. The levels are raised behind it, and the patio is laid on that raised base once it is firm.

What is a random pattern?

A mix of slab sizes laid so the joints do not line up, which gives the paving a natural look.
