About the job
This was a back garden and a front garden for the same home in Plymouth. The back garden was dug out to a depth that allowed for a hardcore replacement, then 100 to 150mm of 803 sub-base was laid and compacted. The first photos show that stage: the ground levelled and set-out lines marked while the old shed was still standing at the far end.
With the base in, the fence panels and posts went in along the boundary, with the sandstone slabs stacked on site and the sleeper planter already being built. The finished garden has 60 sqm of Indian sandstone in 900x600 slabs, a strip of 40mm pile artificial turf, a sleeper planting area, 30m of concrete and panel fencing and a timber pergola at the far end. A small feather-edge fence and gate give the garden some privacy.
At the front, the old wall was re-rendered and a sleeper wall now divides one side. The same sandstone paves the area, and a small herringbone sandstone set inlay sets the patio apart from the plain slabs around it.
As we put it on our Facebook page, the customer "had been waiting over 12 months to have her garden completed and had been let down along the way."

Questions about this job
What went under the sandstone?
The soil was excavated to a depth that suits a hardcore replacement, then 100 to 150mm of 803 sub-base was laid and compacted before the slabs went down.
Was the front garden part of the same job?
Yes. The front garden was re-rendered at the old wall, given a sleeper dividing wall and paved in the same Indian sandstone, with a small herringbone inlay.
