About the job

The old patio was ripped out first. The before photos show old paving with brick edging, covered furniture and a metal pergola on a gravel and lawn garden.

The process photos show the order of work. A drainage channel was set in concrete against the house wall, with compacted sub-base beside it, and the curved brick edge was set so the patio could run past the old line. Then the sandstone slabs went down on mortar, laid to a string line and checked with a spirit level.

The finished patio wraps the conservatory, with the brick edge following the curve. The drainage is a soakaway and the channel drain along the house, and stepping stones lead to the French doors.

FAQ

Questions about this job

Why is there a channel drain along the house?

A channel set along the wall collects rainwater running off the patio and carries it to the drainage system, rather than letting it sit against the house.

What does the curved brick edge do?

It finishes the sandstone with a neat curved border and sets the extended patio apart from the lawn.
