Rendering for garden and house walls

In short We render walls in Saltash, Plymouth and across Cornwall and Devon, often as part of a wider garden job. This page explains when a wall needs repair and when it needs re-rendering.

The short answer

If the problem is one small area of otherwise sound render, it can usually be repaired. If the render sounds hollow, is cracked or bulging across much of the wall, it is usually better stripped and re-rendered.

Check your wall

Repair or re-render?

Tap the render with your knuckle as you walk along the wall. Sound render rings solid; render that has come away sounds hollow.

Part of a bigger job

Render that finishes a garden.

A lot of our rendering is part of a garden job: a block wall built to hold back a bed, then rendered so it looks finished; or a tired garden wall given a clean coat while the patio goes in beside it.

Doing it in the same job means the wall is finished before the new paving is laid against it, rather than working over a new patio later.

What happens before new render goes on?

Loose and hollow render is hacked off, the wall is cleaned back and any damage is repaired, so the new coats bond to something sound.

Can a garden wall be rendered?

Yes. A rendered garden wall gives a clean, modern finish. On a Plymouth garden makeover we finished a freshly rendered wall as part of the makeover.

Which render finish should I choose?

It depends on the wall and the look of the house. Ask us which finish we would recommend for yours.
