Garden walls in brick, block, stone and sleeper
In short We build garden walls in brick, block and stone, and sleeper walls, in Saltash, Plymouth and across Cornwall and Devon. We also take masonry packages, and this page covers wall types, height rules and the masonry packages we build for local builders.
Wall types
The walls we build.
The photos are recent jobs.

Brick and block garden walls
Boundary and garden walls in brick or block, with a capping course to finish and throw rain off the top.

Stone-effect walls and steps
Walls and steps in a stone-effect brick, to lift a lawn or edge a raised bed beside the house.
Timber sleeper walls
Sleepers stacked to make raised planting beds, low retaining edges and dividing walls. Quick to build and warm to look at.
Height check
How high can it go?
The national permitted development rules set the limits for walls, fences and gates. The same rules apply in Saltash and Plymouth.
| Where the wall is | Height without planning permission |
|---|---|
| Next to a road used by vehicles (including the pavement edge) | Up to 1 m |
| Anywhere else, such as between back gardens | Up to 2 m |
| Around a listed building | Ask the council first |
For builders
Masonry packages.
We also work for local builders and developers. On one recent extension for a local developer we took the full masonry package, from the foundations through to the completed block shell. On a single-storey kitchen extension for a local builder we did the masonry and were asked back to build the garden walls.
If you are a builder needing a bricklayer for a package, call us on 07940 259799.
We had the masonry package for this one and have been asked to come back and build garden walls also.
How high can a garden wall be without planning permission?
Up to 1 m next to a road used by vehicles and up to 2 m elsewhere, under the national permitted development rules. A listed building needs the council's permission first.
What makes a retaining wall different?
It holds back soil, so it carries far more weight than a boundary wall. It needs a proper foundation and a way for water behind it to get out, or the pressure builds up.
Can you match my existing brick?
Often, yes. Bring a photo of the existing wall and we will look for the closest brick and bond, and match the mortar colour.
Do you work for builders?
Yes. We have built full masonry packages for a local developer and a local builder, from the foundations to the finished block shell.
