About the job
This is a porcelain patio for a home in Woolwell, in the Plymouth area. The long run of paving sits along the back of the house with a drainage channel by the door, and the planter walls beside it are finished with coping in the same porcelain.
The coping has a bullnosed edge, as does the step, so the edges are rounded and match the patio. The close-up of the coping shows the tight joints between the pieces. Porcelain is thin and rigid, so it shows every lip, which is why the levels and the finish of the edges matter.
The manhole cover is set into the porcelain, so the access is still there but the cover does not break up the paving. The wide photo shows the lid at the right, with the planter walls running along the patio.

FAQ
Questions about this job
What is an inset manhole lid?
A recessed cover that is filled with the same paving as the patio, so the access stays usable and the surface looks continuous.
What does bullnosed mean?
A rounded edge on coping or a step, softer to look at and kinder underfoot than a square edge.
